Game of Drones: How UAVs can be friend and foe for data centers

The Gatwick debacle recently threw drones into the spotlight. With the ability to take thermal images to assist with maintenance or be strapped with C4 explosives to take out infrastructure weaknesses, drones quite rightly have a mixed reputation.

Many data centre operators may not initially perceive drones to be an immediate threat. Yet security consultant Adam Ringle from the US believes a single picture is the only information needed to start a series of events to bring a data centre build to a standstill.

More drones spotted flying over Delaware's largest male prison

Another drone was spotted flying over Delaware's largest male prison Thursday night, making it the third day this week that an unmanned aircraft hovered over the Smyrna-facility.

The feds recently passed a law authorizing federal departments to safely disable, disrupt or seize control of drones that pose a credible threat.

But for anyone else who thinks shooting down a drone is a good way to get rid of a pesky problem, it's not.

Under federal law, it’s illegal to shoot down any aircraft—this includes a drone, said Adam Ringle, who operates Adam Ringle Consulting, a Townsend company that specializes in drone training and drone solutions.

When under attack, plan is key

Training helps emergency responders prepare for shootings

One never knows when a mass shooting will occur.

But experts who routinely train for such incidents like Wednesday’s Fort Hood, Texas, shooting say having a plan increases the chances of survival. This can be anything from having an escape plan, a hiding spot or, as a last resort, a plan for fighting back.

"Having a plan, practicing that plan and loving your plan to act could very well save your life when that moment strikes as it will always be when you least expect it," said Adam Ringle, president of Townsend-based Adam Ringle Consulting LLC. The company specializes in emergency planning and preparedness.
